Donating Cars and Real Estate

Among the most impactful contributions are donations of vehicles and real estate—gifts that not only provide substantial support for our programs but also offer unique financial benefits to the donor.

For many supporters, a car, truck, or even an RV that is no longer needed can become a lifeline for someone in our community. Through our partnership with CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services), donors can contribute almost any type of vehicle—running or not—with ease. One simple call to the toll-free line (1-877-537-4227) initiates the entire process. Pickup, towing, and paperwork are all coordinated at no cost to the donor. Once the vehicle is sold, the proceeds directly support the essential services that JFSNEPA provides, from mental health counseling to food assistance and safety-net programs. Donors also receive the necessary documentation to claim a tax deduction for their charitable gift.

Real estate donations offer another powerful avenue for contributing to our mission. For individuals or families who find themselves with property they no longer use—or wish to transfer to a meaningful cause—JFSNEPA can accept a wide range of real estate gifts. These include residential homes, rental properties, commercial buildings, vacation homes, farmland, and undeveloped land. Donors often find that giving real estate not only creates a lasting legacy but may also reduce carrying costs, eliminate the burden of maintenance, and provide potential tax advantages. CARS assists with the evaluation process and supports donors through the necessary steps to complete a gift of property.

Whether it is a car sitting in a driveway or a piece of land waiting for its next purpose, these contributions become more than assets—they become hope, support, and stability for individuals and families across Northeastern Pennsylvania.

At JFSNEPA, we are deeply grateful for every donor who chooses to uplift our community through these transformational gifts. To learn more about donating a vehicle or real estate, contact us at 570-344-1186 or info@jfsnepa.org.

Before you continue reading this, I am going to ask you to go to a window or door, open it and squint while looking outside. I’ll wait………..

What did you see? Actually it’s not what you saw but what you did not see that has created disruption and uncertainty about everything we know. As we worry about getting sick or what will happen if we get sick we no longer feel safe. There are also multiple financial uncertainties. We look for information to make sense of this un-seeable thing but struggle with what is the “right” information and what is “not right information.” This un-seeable thing has put us in a position of looking at how we are around and with each other at the moment, because we can no longer fall back on social norms. Without the ability to fall back on what we know, it creates uncertainty for the future. What makes it real is not just the magnitude of what this un-seeable thing is creating, but that we are living it, not just reading about it. We are all sharing in this uncertainty, but we are each doing it alone.

The following are a compilation of ways we can ways live with this uncertainty. While there may be little that is new or you haven’t heard about, I believe it is a good reminder because the future remains uncertain.

           Self-Care

: Maintain a schedule; eat sleep, bathe as if it is a “regular day.” Do some form of exercise or movement both inside, and if you feel comfortable, outside. Watch movies, read for enjoyment, find creative activities that stimulate and help your mind focus.

           Stay connected

: Due to this un-seeable thing, the use of masks, not hugging or shaking hands is the loss of “personal” connection creates loss. We struggle to visit family; we worry about love ones in hospitals, nursing homes, etc. Obviously one of the benefits of the internet age there is Zoom, Facetime where we can have a form personal interaction. However, many family experiences, holidays, life events will not be shared due to the worry of un-seeable thing. Be creative in finding ways to create shared family experiences, such as watching a movie at the same time, while living in different locations and then talk about it together.

Be informed but recognize we are still learning

: As we struggle to see this un-seeable thing, we are looking for more information. The amount of information can become confusing. What is fact one day may be changed or the opposite the next. What is opinion can be seen or presented as fact. Too much information can heighten and intensify uncertainty. No matter what, limit the amount of time you are looking for information.

I want to stress this is just a small list of what we can do to live with the uncertainty. We are moving towards the lifting of the restrictions that have guided how we have lived over the past month and a half. However, as we work to follow the guidelines that move us into the future uncertainty remains; we don’t know how it will go. The longer we live with the uncertainty the farther away we get from the hope we will get back to what we know. Accept we are going to be living with uncertainty; accept what we can’t control. It means finding and maintaining the strength within ourselves to do what we do to feel empowered over uncertainty, even if it goes against what we hear or see others doing around us. Until we can see the un-seeable, not only do I wish everyone “Shalom;” let me add “be safe.”

This is me self-isolating as a healthy (knock wood!) elder taking extra precautions. I just finished getting dressed as if I were going out. I even put on a little bit of lipstick and blush and earrings. Despite being isolated, I’m making every effort to look and feel my best and do normal things such as making my bed, vacuuming, and doing yoga, stretching, and dancing. Don’t let the new “normal” get you down. We will get through this.”

Because there are so many variables over which we do not have control, it is important to focus on those things that we can control. Understanding the variables will begin to help us take control over our anxious feelings. For instance, taking recommended precautions, social distancing, staying home and ensuring you have adequate supplies will bring us a better sense of peace and order. Taking good care of ourselves with proper hydration, nutrition and sleep will provide for better safety and health overall. Finding ways to be socially connected, mentally stimulated and physically active during this time are ways to keep anxious feelings from taking over.

It’s hard not to be aware of the Coronavirus right now. Many people are concerned. Should you be worried?

The best answer to that question is that you should always take precautions to keep yourself guarded against illness.

The Coronavirus is a strain of the flu and the flu kills tens of thousands of Americans each year. One of the bigger differences right now between the Coronavirus and seasonal flu is that there are no medications yet for Coronavirus.

The CDC is closely monitoring an outbreak of the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Because the outbreak of the virus is rapidly changing, please visit the CDC website for the most current information.

While the CDC considers the spread of the Coronavirus a serious situation and is supporting States in their efforts to take preparedness measures, the immediate risk in the U.S. is currently considered low. The CDC recommends that everyone should practice simple daily precautions to help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.

When we watch or read the media about Coronavirus it may seem overwhelming to us. Quarantines being set up, people not allowed to leave cruise ships, protective masks sold out everywhere and people refusing to travel. It all seems very scary. These are precautions many places including the CDC have put in place to try to stop the spread of this flu. We must also be aware that everyone infected may not have major life-threatening symptoms. In fact the biggest spread of the virus has likely come from those with little to no symptoms who spread it to others without knowing they were infected.

During last week’s briefing by members of the President’s Coronavirus Task Force, US Health and Human Services Secretary Azar said that, “Although the virus represents a potentially very serious public health threat, and we expect to continue seeing more cases here, the immediate risk to the American public at this time is low.” CDC Director Dr. Redfield also emphasized the point that the “real threat to the American public is flu” so wash your hands, cough into your sleeve, don’t touch your face, and “if you have not gotten the flu vaccine, get the flu vaccine.”

In my line of work I am always helping seniors, it’s why I know that it is often this joyous time of year that is the hardest for many. In the coming months many religions and cultures celebrate holidays. Magazines, social media and TV advertisements start their yearly campaigns of announcing the upcoming holidays showing images of love and joy; for many people, the reality of the holidays is not so cheerful.

While aging can bring wisdom and experience, there are inevitable losses that even the healthiest seniors face. Loved ones and friends fall ill and pass away. Energy and mobility levels often decrease, resulting in feelings of lost independence and opportunities. Neighborhoods change over time, leaving even those well enough to remain in their own homes feeling lonely. The focus on family, friends and togetherness during this time of year can actually bring melancholy feelings to the forefront. Feelings of isolation and loneliness can take hold, especially during the holidays, a time that in the past was filled with activities and traditions with family and friends.

Following are a few tips how we can enhance a senior’s holiday experience:

Make a point of actively listening when the senior wants to talk, even if the discussion is negative. An honest and empathic conversation can help the senior process what is bothering him/her, whether they are mourning a loss or coming to term with new challenges in their life.

Remind them how important they are as part of your life, your family member’s lives and these annual holiday celebrations. They may feel useless or burdensome if they cannot contribute to or fully participate in the festivities like they used to. Encourage them to do what they are capable of.

Over the years, holiday cards diminish in quantity and often bring bad news. Be gentle with your loved one if these annual greetings are an important tradition of theirs. If possible, ask other family members and friends to contribute a simple card, picture or drawing to help keep the senior’s seasonal mail more upbeat. If needed assist the senior to get and write their outgoing cards.

Help them add decorative touches to their home or room. Many seniors enjoy reflecting on past holidays as they unpack cherished decorations, so be sure to listen to their stories and as about special items.

Cook and bake traditional foods and treats with your senior.

          If you cannot visit, call.

The most important thing you can do to make them feel loved and included is to spend time with them. Look at family photos, listen to seasonal music, or do crafts together.

Watch for ongoing signs of depression. What at first may seem like “holiday blues” could turn into depression if not treated. If signs of depression continue encourage them to seek help by contacting Jewish Family Service for a confidential consultation.

Wishing all a healthy new year, a year filled with gratitude.

Mental Health in the workplace is a real thing, the question is how will you handle it? Mental health disorders are among the most burdensome health concerns in the United States. Many people with mental health disorders also need care for other physical health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness, and disorders that affect muscles, bones and joints.

Employers for many years now have made it a priority to implement healthy workplaces. Those healthy workplaces however often revolve around healthy eating, exercise, and sleep. Those programs focus on the body, with the idea that a healthy body can be at work, and accomplish more while at work. It is the mind however that neither the employer or the employee want to talk about.

Workplace wellness programs can identify those at risk and connect them to treatment and put in place supports to help people reduce and manage stress. By addressing mental health issues in the workplace, employers can reduce health care costs for their business and employees.

Poor Mental Health and Stress can negatively affect employees:

      Job Performance and productivity

      Engagement with one’s work

      Communication with coworkers

      Physical capability and daily functioning

Depression interferes with a person’s ability to complete physical job tasks about 20% of the time and reduces cognitive performance about 35% of the time. Think about that statistic for a moment and ask yourself, in your line of business can you risk an employee who is not functioning at 100%?

The Workplace is an optimal setting to create a culture of health because:

Communication structures are already in place.

Programs and polices come from a central team.

      Social support networks are available.

Employers can offer incentives to reinforce healthy behaviors.

Employers can use data to track progress and measure the effects.

      Action Steps Employers can take:

Make mental health self-assessment tools available to all employees.

Offer health insurance with no or low out of pocket costs for depression medications and mental health counseling.

        Distribute materials

Create and maintain dedicated, quiet spaces for relaxation activities.

Give employees opportunities to participate in decisions about issues that affect job stress.

As someone who has donated to organizations like Jewish Family Service for as long as I can remember I have always been proud to support the good work they do. Each year I’m investing in the people and the programs that support the community I live in.

My history with JFS started long before me; Sam Samter, JFS’s first president, was my great uncle. In 2002 as a living descendant of Sam, I attended in his honor at JFS’s 85th Annual Meeting where past presidents were honored. My connection with JFS would continue to grow and in 2004 I followed in Sam’s footsteps and joined the JFS board, serving as secretary for two years. I would serve on the board from 2004 – 2012 and then again from 2014 – 2017.

It was during my second term when I decided that I wanted to make sure I was able to support JFS even after I was gone.

I decided to include Jewish Family Service of Northeast Pennsylvania in my will.

I believe in the mission of JFS, I have seen firsthand the good work they do and I know they will use my gift wisely so that I can continue to help lives, long after mine has ended. I’ve always considered myself a philanthropist. Many of us often think of philanthropists as those who give millions of dollars to organizations, but anyone can be a philanthropist, regardless of status or net worth.

I encourage everyone to speak to either Sheila at JFS or talk to your lawyer or advisor about a bequest.

Bequests can be cash, securities, property, a percentage of an estate or a beneficiary of an insurance policy. Bequests will help non-profits like JFS survive and grow well into the future.

Having JFS in my will makes sure that the money that I have donated over the many years will continue to be put to work well into the future. I’m thankful for the work that JFS does, and I’m thankful that I’ll be a part of their history forever.

During her career as a social worker, both in Israel and America, she has worked with varied clientele from different races, ethnicity, places of origin and backgrounds. Much of Maggy’s practice has been and continues to be with the older adult community.

In her new position as a part time geriatric social worker, she’ll primarily focus on the mental, emotional and behavioral well-being of older adults. Based in the system theory, Maggy utilizes a holistic approach to psychotherapy and client’s relationship to his/her environment. Working at an accredited agency like JFS ensures the client that the highest standards of professionalism are achieved and supervision is ongoing.

Happy New Year! The calendar has once again turned over to a brand new year and that has everyone thinking, new ME! New Year, New You, Right?

January is that special time of year when product advertising reminds us that another year has passed and you’re still imperfect. You’re too fat, you’re too poor and you don’t vacation enough.

A poll conducted in December by NPR, PBS Newshour and Marist showed that 44% of American Adults intended to make resolutions for 2019. Ultimately as few as 8% will actually accomplish those goals.

The history of New Year’s resolutions have been brought into modern cultures by religious traditions like the Jewish High Holidays. These traditions focus on looking back and making amends going forward. Today, many of these traditions have been stripped down mostly to what products you can buy to change your life.

In reality, the added pressure to accomplish your new year resolutions can add further stress for failing to do so. Changing oneself is hard work, the results are certainly worth it, but to be successful the motivation has to come from the desire to change, not the change of the calendar.

We should always be striving to be our best selves. Being our best selves however means we are healthy, happy and good to those around us. However, if you are set on making some resolutions this year we offer you a few choices to get you started.

I have heard it said many times when people discuss being emotionally strong, “I can’t cry”, “I have to be strong”, “I have to do this by myself” Or “I have to “man-up.” While reflecting on the idea of being “strong”. In the movie the

The question becomes, are our feelings a weakness? Emotions are a part of us, they are what we all experience each day. The statements above recognize that feelings are experienced. However, it comes down to how one expresses those feelings.

One of my resources for this article stressed that, conversations tend to focus more on what we’re doing or what we’re thinking. In fact, most people find it easier to start sentences with, “I think…” instead of “I feel…” simply because it feels less awkward 1.” The author talks about how “most of us are never educated about feelings. Instead, we’re supposed to learn socially acceptable ways to deal with feelings by watching the people around us 1

        Emotional Strength

Emotional strength is not just the feelings we experience at the moment, but what we do afterword’s. Expression of feelings creates the opportunity for emotional release, finding peace within self, then the freedom to connect with others and act. The person who responds with feelings and then goes forward to resolve the issue is an emotionally strong person.

Emotionally strong people are able to:

          Be less discouraged by setbacks.

          Be more adaptable to change.

Have the skills to recognize and express their needs.

Focus on getting around a hurdle rather than on the hurdle itself.

          Learn from mistakes and criticism.

Have the ability to see the larger perspective in a challenging situation.

Recover more quickly from emotional wounds such as failure or rejection. 3

        Identifying Your Feelings

So what are techniques for learning to identify feelings?

           Examine your physical response

. There is a physical reaction when we experience feelings. Reactions such as tight chest/shoulders, stomach tightness or pain, face flush or tears. As you experience those physical reactions; step back and ask “what is going on?”

           Identify the Feeling.

Talk to someone, a friend, family member or social worker to assist you in examining and identifying what your body is expressing.

           Be Still

. As you experience these feelings, don’t turn to something to distract you. Reflect on what you are experiencing so can you grow into remembering the feeling.

           Write

. Take the time to write a journal or a summary of what you are experiencing and what is going on that is causing you to think and feel and how you are expressing that feeling. Learn what and how you are reacting to the life events.

           Listen to music

. All forms of music elicit feelings. Tie the music to a particular feeling.

           Reflect.

Spend the end of the day thinking about your day; what made you happy, angry, nervous, etc. Use the journal to review what happened during the day. Look at how you reacted, what worked and how you could have reacted differently; learning how to express the feeling in a healthy way.

Growing into knowing and experiencing your feelings can be difficult when you have not developed the skill base to think about how you feel. However, with practice one’s ability to recognize, experience and learn how to express your emotions in a healthy way will improve yourself and your interpersonal relationships.

The Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow were all able to embrace their emotions. However, that was the movie ending, remember if you need help processing your emotions, the social workers at Jewish Family Service are here to assist.

One of the better known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. According to the

about 64.5 million Americans, or 26.5 percent of the adult population gave 7.9 billion hours of volunteer service worth $175 billion during a 12 month period.

During its 100 years of existence Jewish Family Service has benefited from many volunteers. These volunteers have made the implementation of the mission of JFS and its impact on the community possible. Commonly translated as Loving Kindness, Kindness or Love, Chesed, is central to Jewish ethics and Jewish theology. Chesed is considered a virtue on its own, and also for its contribution to tikun olam. As you can see Chesed is the basis of a wide variety of communal institutions.

Good health is as much of a journey as it is a destination. Traditionally, our health has been left to the care of our doctors, nurses and other health professionals. In recent years we have started to realize that good health means much more than a set of numbers tracking height, weight, heart rate and cholesterol. It starts with the individual. Taking an integrated approach to well being includes physical and emotional health, sense of purpose and connections to our overall quality of life.

A new study by the United Health Group and the Optimum Institute has found a link between volunteering and better physical, mental and emotional health. Here are some of the more interesting findings: Of the people interviewed who volunteered during the last 12 months: 78% of the interviewed said that volunteering has lowered their stress levels; 94% said that volunteering helped improve their moods; 96% said it enriched their sense of purpose in life and more than 75% said that volunteering has made them feel healthier.

  Your Connection to the Community

In addition, volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people and organizations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills.

Life changes, or transitions, are a natural part of life and can occur with or without our knowledge. Changes can be planned such as getting married, having children, buying or selling a home, and divorce or retirement. Life changes can occur with out being expected such as death, illness or a sudden loss of a job.

        The Effects of Change

Periods of transition can take its toll emotionally and physically. We can experience physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, digestive problems, trembling or rapid heart beat. Emotional manifestations arise because of feeling overwhelmed resulting in mood swings, sadness, anxiety and irritability. Behavioral changes such as changes in sleep, appetite, difficulty concentrating, social withdrawal, and increased substance use can also happen.

        Dealing with Change

The first step in getting a grip on these reactions is recognizing you are reacting off of the change. The next step is to develop an understanding about what is most troubling about the transition. The third step is to create a system to deal with ones reaction before, during and after the change. Some techniques below can help during the periods of transition include:

         •

Relaxing and taking care of yourself.

Listen to music, watch a movie, do relaxation or deep breathing exercises, drink herbal tea, eat balanced meals, etc.
•

          Physical Exercise.

Any thing from strenuous exercise to taking a walk around your neighborhood.
•

          Talk to people.

Reach out to a support system with people you trust, or with individuals who have experienced the change your are going through,
•

Focus on developing the new routines and try new things.

Even as the new routine feels uncomfortable in the beginning; monitor what you say and think, watch for thoughts and statements that are negative and self-defeating.
•

When feasible maintain traditions which are compatible with the new life style.

For example celebrate holidays, birthdays, maintain social and family relationships and continue religious activities.
•

Don’t fear or avoid the feelings created as a result of the change.

Stay away from alcohol or drugs or anything that will blunt your feelings.

        Dealing with the Transition Period

Feelings of sadness and missing what was lost are a natural part of change. During the transition period weaving known traditions and new patterns creates a sense of stability to help work through feelings of loss. However in some instances mourning can be difficult even when change will result in positive outcomes.

If you feel like your struggle through your life transitions is so overwhelming you feel like you are losing your way we at Jewish Family Service would like to help. Give Jewish Family Service a call at 570-344-1186.

In the movie Singing in the Rain there are athletic dance scenes that Gene Kelly was famous for. There is the famous scene of Gene Kelly dancing in the rain to the movie’s theme song, Singing in the Rain. However, the scene that comes to my mind is Donald O’Conner dancing while singing the song, Make ‘Em Laugh. In this scene Gene Kelly is despondent about his career. Donald O’Conner reacts to him by singing about the benefits of laughter while flying around a set, wrestling with a mannequin and flying through a wall. What did the writers of this 1952 musical, Adolph Green, Betty Comden and Arthur Freed, know that research is teaching us about the effect of humor and laughter today?

Laughter has been shown to stabilize blood pressure, stimulate circulation, assist digestion, increase the supply of oxygen to the blood, decrease muscle tension, strengthen the immune system and stimulate hormones that relieve pain. Laughter and humor relieves stress, improve depression and decrease anger. Humor and laughter can help overcome fear and gain confidence. Humor enhances relationships by providing a means of expression for people to connect.

Ok, so what does all this mean? Investing more humor and laughter into one’s day-to-day life creates perspective when dealing with daily problems. Humor enhances emotional and physical health, and when used to laugh with, and not at, doesn’t hurt relationship, either.

Here are suggestions to increase your sense of humor:
• Give yourself permission to stop and take time to laugh.
• Spend more time around people who are good laughers. Don’t feel guilty about your own laughter.
• Learn what makes you laugh and enjoy yourself. Listen to comedy audio tapes when driving, read comedy books and articles, watch comedies and go to performances by comedians.
• Don’t stop yourself from laughing at those laughable moments. However, be aware of when laughter is appropriate and how the people you are with will react to the humor and/or laughter.

It has, also, been suggested that fake laughter when one is anxious, depressed or angry, will have a positive effect on how you feel. There is a Yiddish proverb that states, “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul.” So go ahead, make ‘em laugh.

Jewish Family Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania (JFS) has a special concern for the elderly in our community. As part of our community we are proud to offer programs and services that encourage healthy aging. One of these services is the Kosher Meals on Wheels program (KMOW).

What is Kosher Meals on Wheels?

Home delivered kosher meals are provided for persons who live at home in the Jewish Community. The goal of The KMOW program is to provide balanced, nutritional meals to those who temporarily or permanently are unable to prepare on their own. Nutritious meals are important in preventing individuals from becoming ill and/or assisting people to recover from hospitalization. The meals are prepared at the

under rabbinical supervision so clients can observe their religious dietary laws.

Who is Eligible for Kosher Meals on Wheels?

When a client calls to receive KMOW the social worker will make an appointment for a home visit. This home visit will help evaluate and determine if additional services would be beneficial. Part of the evaluation is making sure the client are receiving all services available such as transportation. If someone is needed to coordinate and arrange access to these services, JFS can help.

Kosher Meals on Wheels can be paid for privately or via financial assistance. If the individual is not eligible for financial assistance and in need of home delivered meals, JFS social workers can also assess the situation for financial assistance.

How and When are Meals Delivered?

Kosher Meals on Wheels are delivered five days of the week by dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers are screened and trained by Jewish Family Service. When a client lives outside of Scranton special arrangements can be made to have the meals delivered.

If you, or someone you know may benefit from Kosher Meals on Wheels please call Maggy Bushwick, LCSW, NCG, Coordinator Older Adult Services at 570 344-1186 or email: mbuswhick@jfsnepa.org to discuss further details.

My hero is my counselor, Don Minkoff. He’s kind, helpful, and really cares about his clients. Everybody he helps is thankful for him. He never forgets what to do to help them, and if he makes a mistake, he’ll admit it very clearly and honestly. He gets me.

Don is one of the many counselors at Jewish Family Services, but I’d say that he is the best one. I’m only one of his many clients. He wears funny ties and looks like a clown because of his weird hair. Don tries his very best to help everyone. He helps me when I’m in a terrible grumpy mood, to when I’m really sad and need to talk to someone. He’s been my counselor for about 3 years and has never failed me. Don respects my decisions and doesn’t judge me for things I like that he never will, not like anyone else. I usually hide my feelings and don’t like talking to anyone (including my family) but Don usually makes me feel better, so I talk to him. He knows that I can’t sleep and I’m tired of confessing, and respects it.

If you knew Don, you’d know that to make people feel better, he makes them laugh. He understands things that you tell him, well, except for my Youtube hobby. He doesn’t tell anybody anything you tell him, unless you tell him too. That’s what I like about him, he keeps secrets. Nobody else I know does, that’s why I only trust him to tell things to. I’m sure other people at JFS do that too, but they are probably not as funny as Don. I want Don to get known, I want him to be known for helping people like me through hard times that they can’t handle themselves. He talks to adults to. That is why he is my hero. There are many more unsaid reasons. He doesn’t make fun of me for liking the youtuber, LeafyIsHere!

I hope that when Don passes he will be remembered. I sure will remember him for the rest of my life. He helps me a lot. Everyday.

The staff members were honored with the Distinguished Service Award at the 102nd Annual Meeting held in the Linder Room at the Scranton JCC on June 27, 2017.

In winter months, driving conditions tend to be more dangerous due to rainy or snowy roads. For seniors, age-related declines in vision, mobility and reaction time can limit driving abilities, making it even more difficult to drive safely on slippery roads. To this end, we have put together 6 tips for safe driving that are important for your safety and that of others.

Follow these 6 tips to ensure your safe driving abilities!

           Get regular health check-ups.

Monitor changes in vision, hearing and mobility by getting regular medical check-ups. If your primary physician or optometrist notices changes, be proactive by following their recommended advice for glasses, hearing aids or other support devices. It is also important to manage any chronic conditions such as diabetes and be aware of how many medications you are taking as they may affect your driving abilities.

           Maintain your mobility

           .

Adopt a fitness regimen to ensure your physical ability to drive. One of the most common mistakes older adults make is forgetting to check blind spots, so practice exercises that strengthen range of motion in your neck so that you are comfortable turning your head. We also recommend practicing yoga or trying back-strengthening exercises so that you are able to endure sitting while driving, though it may be best to avoid lengthy car rides.

Keep your car in good working condition.

Regular services, tune-ups and oil changes will ensure your car stays in tip-top shape. In addition, make sure that windshields, mirrors and headlights are clean and that the brightness on the dashboard’s instrument panel is turned all the way up to increase visibility when driving at night.

           Plan ahead.

Avoid driving in dangerous weather conditions or during the evening hours when it is dark outside. These conditions may impair visibility and increase the chances of unforeseen obstacles and delays such as accidents, road closures or traffic. We also recommend looking up where you are going and planning your route ahead of time so that you won’t need to use GPS devices or look at maps while you are driving.

           Take a refresher course.

Organizations like AAA believe that driving is a skill that should be continually improved, and to this end, offer driver refresher courses to the public. These courses help bring drivers up-to-speed on the latest advancements in vehicle technology, how they can affect your driving as well as the incentive of potential discounts on insurance premiums.

           Know your limitations.

Be aware of your limitations and avoid any situations that make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe. For instance, if your hands hurt when turning the wheel, try using a wheel cover that is softer and can be easily gripped. By knowing your limitations, you can be proactive about reducing your risk factors to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road.

We hope that by knowing your limitations and following the above 6 tips you will be able to drive safely and comfortably. However, it is important to recognize when it is time to turn in the keys, which can be a difficult but courageous decision. To learn about the benefits of turning in the keys, read our blog “

Jewish Family Service (JFS) of NEPA was founded with one thing in mind: to serve the community. Open to all faiths and backgrounds, Jewish Family Service is a human service organization whose mission reflects the Jewish tradition of caring and compassion for all people in need. Through professional counseling, advocacy and educational programming, JFS seeks to enhance and strengthen the quality of individual, family and community life.

As executive director Sheila Nudelman Abdo explained, JFS recently celebrated its centennial and has plans to continue its growth and expansion by continuing with its mission of community service and charity.

Can you tell us a little about Jewish Family Service of NEPA? How long have you been in business?

In 1915, concerned community leaders organized to coordinate the relief activities of all service organizations in existence in the Jewish community at the time. They established an organization whose mission was of philanthropic and charitable purpose that was also devoted to improving the quality of life for individuals and families in the Jewish and general community. This past June, Jewish Family Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania celebrated its 100

What are some of the services you offer to clients? What types of clients do you accommodate?

The largest program at JFS is mental health services. The organization offers counseling for individuals, couples, families and groups by social workers licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Life can get complicated, and we’re here to help people through their challenges.

The JFS comprehensive approach works for clients of all ages. JFS social workers are by their client’s sides as advocates working with teachers, employers, physicians and others. The social workers’ assistance extends well beyond the office doors. Our services seek to enhance and strengthen the quality of individual, family and community life. JFS is a human service organization that reflects the Jewish tradition of caring and compassion for all people in need, not just those who are Jewish.

Research shows that each year indirect costs of untreated mental health disorders can result in a more than $80 billion loss to businesses due to decrease of productivity and absenteeism, and more than one million people miss work every day due to stress at work and home. JFS joined the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce to make businesses aware of these alarming statistics and to let them know that we can help through mental health counseling or employee assistance programs. Being aware of a problem is the first step to solving a problem. We, as humans, often wait too long to seek help.

What is something unique about JFS of NEPA that you would like people to know?

Our Holocaust Survivors Assistance Program stabilizes the mental and physical status of those affected by Nazi persecution in order for them to live their remaining years in dignity and as independently as possible. Last year alone, JFS helped regional Holocaust survivors receive more than $9,000 in financial assistance with monies received from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany Emergency Assistance Program. Since the program has been established in our area, more than a quarter million dollars has been distributed locally.

Our Dental Care Center has been part of JFS since 1920. This unique dental service is one of two such programs affiliated with a JFS in the United States, the other being JFS Atlanta. The Dental Care Center is collaboration with the Scranton Dental Society and Fortis Institute and it has provided more than $26,000 of free dental care for eligible Lackawanna County residents who are uninsured and unable to afford dental treatment.

How can the community at large get involved with Jewish Family Service of NEPA?

JFS continues to move forward growing through strategic partnerships with other community organizations and building our services and programs within the community. A large portion of our growth is through the generous support of the community itself. JFS relies on the community for donations, funding, volunteers and, most importantly, spreading the word.

Why did you join the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce?

The goal at JFS is to continue to grow within the community and building relationships and networking with community organizations and local businesses is a large part of that. Joining the Chamber is a great way to become part of that community through the Chamber’s programs, events and initiatives.

On August 19, 2015 Jewish Family Service was the Scranton Wilkes Barre Railriders Community Organization of the Game. Although the evening got started with a little rain shower by the time the ballpark gates opened the rain had given way to a beautiful summer evening.

The Community Organization of the Game is an outreach program that allows a different local community organization to be spotlighted at the ballpark during every home game. As part of the program the organization gets to set up a table at the park entrance to offer brochures and speak to people about the organizations goals and mission, during our evening at the Railriders we spoke to many people about what JFS has to offer, we even had some special guests stop by to say hello!

Pregame Jewish Family Service was able to speak to everyone attending the game about who we are and what we offer as well as how to contact us. The on field interview prior to the game was great exposure for JFS. As the community organization of the game we even had a JFS representative throw out the first pitch, in our case we got a pro to do it for us!

The exposure that JFSNEPA received as part of the community organization of the game will hopefully continue the awareness of JFS and JFS services in our local community. In order for community support we need to continue to get out in front of our community and let them know the good that JFS is doing. The Railriders should be applauded for such a great program which allows organizations like JFS to not only get the word out but have a great time doing it.

I only travel by train; where as the rest of my family prefers planes. I find the pace of riding the train peaceful and relaxing; watching the world go chuga-chuga by at the same time as I am reading and listening to music. Two years ago while riding the train from Milwaukee to Chicago (The Hiawatha, is a commuter train route between the cities of Milwaukee and Chicago operated by Amtrak) a man was sitting a row in front of me. He was doing business on his cell phone and working on his computer, which was not the problem. It was how he was doing business. He was loud and very inconsiderate of the other people in the car. He was all into stressing how good “I am” even as he was demeaning competitors and co-workers within his company. In-addition he gossiped about people he worked with, using language and discussing situations, which fortunately there were no children within ear shot.

The use of phones has come a long way. Back in the day, you went through an operator to talk with a person if they had a phone. Now you are able to dial directly to anyone with a phone. What was once used in the privacy of our homes, or if in public within “a telephone booth,” is now used openly in public. This should imply an awareness of others. My train buddy seemed to be unaware and unconcerned about how he talked to associates which was in total disregard to me and the other people in the car; making the ride anything but relaxing. Today, this type of situation is commonplace but the rules of good manners still apply. Here are some suggestions for being respectful of others when using a phone in a public place:

Know where to use and not to use your phone, remembering to turn-off the phone or put the ring tone on silence where appropriate. One of the articles used for this article reported a survey in which of the 1,035 respondents over half admitted they would happily answer their phone while making a purchase at a shop, 41% while eating at a restaurant and 10% while in a library.

Don’t light up your phone in a dark place to check and see if you have received any calls or texts.

Stay away from others while talking on the phone.

Do not talk too loudly, lower your voice.

Be aware of how you are talking on the phone.

Do not put the phone on speaker in public.

Do not talk about personal details in public.

If you are with someone and know you will be expecting to receive or use your cell phone, let the other person know.

Do not use your cell phone when driving. This is the law.

Don’t get me wrong, I am far from against the use of cell phones and other forms of social media. Cell phones, social media sites, blogging and gaming sites have allowed us to share almost immediately multiple aspects of our lives with anyone. The benefits they provide allow us to link and communicate with people, access information and a variety of entertainment instantly.

However, as the technology evolves how are we growing as we use the technology? What are the positive and negative consequences of connecting through technology than relating face to face? Are we any different at relating, being respectful and compassionate than before the evolution of technology as we know it today?

For this reason I have been writing a series of articles for JFS which focus on both the benefit and detriment of using social media in communicating. However, today as I conclude all I am asking is Don’t be rude!

With the internet the reach has become worldwide through the use of e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and other types of social media. For example, an individual I was working with found a rental listing on Craig’s List with an emotionally charged story about why it was listed. The person completed an online application with identifying information including his social security number. The individual then went to look at the house and found there was a for sale sign from a local real estate company on the front yard. After researching the listing together we were able to identify it as a con. We contacted the real estate company. The real estate company had the individual follow-up with their office, who were working with the Attorney General’s office. The scam was based out of a country in Africa and had been using the local property as part of a larger internet scam. In reflecting on what happened the person stated, “It was the perfect house” with the “perfect story” that went with the listing on Craig’s List.

Therein lies the issue; when something feels right, we will “trust” the information before us. However, it is important to ask questions before responding to anything that looks good. The following are some suggestions of what to question:

Be cautious of unsolicited e-mails. If you do not know the source do not open them.

Guard your personal information. Do not provide any personal information unless you know the source.

Be aware of imposters. Do not enter contests run by unfamiliar companies. The information you provide in an “entry form” may be used to find and target potential victims.

Know who you are dealing with. If the seller or charity is unfamiliar check with state or local consumer protection agencies or if available read feedback from online forums or blogs. If possible, get an address and a phone number to verify legitimacy.

Do not believe promises of easy money.

Understand the offer. Make sure that all details about an online product or service are clearly spelled out.

Resist pressures. If there is an immediate demand for action, it is probably a scam.

Beware of “dangerous downloads.” Do not download from a source you do not know. Even if you know the source a virus can be attached to the download. Have up-to-date antivirus and mal-ware software on your computer.

It is important to understand our thoughts and feelings and ask questions before responding. Always have a healthy mistrust. If you have a question about a particular offer, you can explore if it is a scam through an internet search. Type in the program or activity followed by “scam” or “hoax” in the browser’s dialogue box and commence the search. Carefully examine the results for any postings that might identify whether the focus of your search is a scam, a hoax or is the real thing.

When being cautious in a busy world taking the time to do the research will save you hours of grief in the future. So as you explore the internet, always keep in mind “is it real or is it…..”

Sheila Abdo has been Executive Director of Jewish Family Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania (JFS NEPA) since 1995, prior to that she was a Social Worker for the organization. Under her leadership, JFS has developed into a comprehensive social service agency serving not only Lackawanna County but expanding into the surrounding regions of the Pocono area, doubling in both staff and revenue. Sheila was responsible for bringing the agency through a total office renovation which professionalized the agency for both staff and clients. Many new programs were developed during this time to include Holocaust Survivors Assistance Service, the Mae S. Gelb Kosher Food Pantry, Guardianship of Person Service and a wellness series that partners with the business community targeted specifically to the Baby Boomer population.

The 27th Annual Teen Symposium on the Holocaust was held at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center on May 5th and 6th. Staff and board members from JFS both attended and took part in the event which uses first hand accounts as Survivors tell students the horrors of the Holocaust. JFS Board President Susan Connors, acting as Master of Ceremonies, welcomed hundreds of students from area schools and introduced the film

which tells the gripping truths of how the Holocaust changed and took the lives and childhoods of Jewish Children between 1933 and 1945, up to one and a half million children were murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators during that time.

Alan Moskin, Former Staff Sergeant in the 66th Infantry in General George Patton’s 3rd Army, was a Liberator and told his story which at times was hard to listen to as he told of the horrors he faced and witnessed. Mr. Moskin warned the students and attendees ahead of time he would not pull any punches, but it was in the details of what he lived that truly allowed one to understand what was inflicted in those who lived in the camps. It wasn’t until 1995, 50 years later that Mr. Moskin would even speak to anyone about what he saw.

Over 14 Holocaust survivors spoke to students in breakout sessions, our very own Maggy Bushwick facilitated the session with survivor Sol Lurie. Sol’s message to the kids is that he did not hate all Germans, hating all Germans would not have made him any better of a person; we should not hate. Sol was a child of the Holocaust but went on to fight for the country he loved, “I am proud to be an American”. He left the kids with one big request, “Go home and hug your mothers and fathers, tell them you love them, you only get one mother and one father”.

The day ended with the 50 minute play Lida Stein and the Righteous Gentile, a play that follows ordinary people from ordinary families caught up in the extraordinary political and social upheaval of the Nazi era, focusing on the relationship between Lida Stein, a Jewish teenage girl, and her best friend Dora Krause, a German teenage girl.

For some students what they heard or saw at the symposium will sink in right away, for many it will take time for them to understand what they learned. One thing is for certain, many films and documentaries have been made about the Holocaust but hearing the stories directly from a person, a human being no different than you, standing in front of you has an impact that no film or book can ever give you. Most of the students also do not realize they are the last generation of students that will likely hear of these first had accounts of the Holocaust as many survivors pass on. With that it will be their responsibility to understand what the past has taught us in order to not repeat it in the future.
